Gary T. Pope served as County Attorney for Newberry County from 1980 through 1995 while practicing with the firm of Pope and Hudgens, P.A.. He served full-time as Newberry County attorney from August 2003 until he joined Pope Zeigler in May 2008. Mr. Pope has lectured on governmental law issues at seminars hosted by the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Association of County Attorneys, and the South Carolina Association of Counties.


REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

  • As local counsel for Newberry County, Mr. Pope played a leading role in a creative and successful refinancing of Newberry County's debt on its Nursing Home and Retirement Center. This transaction was honored by The Bond Buyer report for as one of the Ten Best Deals of the Year in 2005.
  • Pope was lead counsel for the County of Dorchester in Sojourner v. Town of St. George and County of Dorchester, 383 S.C. 171, 679 S.E.2d 182 (S.C. 2009), in which the South Carolina Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a century old law granting local landowners the power to control the holding of referendums in certain instances.
